We have searched and criss-crossed a huge forest, without any result, other than that our calves appear to adapt very badly to this 30km zigzag through the undergrowth. I fall asleep on my diary, as I write.

13 September

Guard in Chigy, a few kilometres from Luzy. We are at an important crossroads, and must report any German convoys, so that they receive the welcome they deserve upon their arrival in the neighbourhood.

It is true that they are becoming less frequent, and we can only hope for latecomers.

Some nearby farmers, informed of our presence, bring us three big roasted chickens, with chips, around midday. For twelve of us, we can’t complain, especially since, in the bottom of the baskets, we can see beautiful white cheeses, crème fraiche and pies. As the neighbouring meadow has spread its prettiest flowered tablecloth under the apple trees, and the sun is also playing its part, we feel cheerful.

After this delicious day of relaxation in the grass, we return to Luzy, leaving for those who are to replace us three chicken carcasses, and hope for renewed generosity for the evening meal!
